Ministries Cover Costs of Health Care as Alternative to Insurance

Sovereign Solutions Editor’s Note:

In an earlier post on this BLOG I brought to your attention a number of personal exemptions to the Obamacare IRS penalty. As you may recall, there are a good deal of easy options to pursue in order to avoid it.

The featured content below covers more in particular one of those exemptions. It fleshes it out for you.

More important, though, is the fact that you see with that particular exemption another, perhaps even more important factor for you, depending on your circumstances.

That factor is this: a different route to pursue in order to purchase something to mete exorbitant healthcare costs, should they present themselves.

It IS important to some people that they avoid paying a needless harassment called an individual shared responsibility payment. However, I would be lacking if I only went so far as that–some of us really want something more than a fancy and expensive “get out of jail free” token!

The bottom line is this:

When you look at the average cost of a traditional health insurance product today, you can start to see significant value to the healthcare ministry services.

In a future post I will highlight some figures for you so that you can better see how these may be valuable to you outside of being simply an exemption.

The featured article alone does well to demonstrate that healthcare sharing ministries provide essentially what many wish to get with traditional healthcare insurance: reduction of unplanned and very significant healthcare related costs.

I encourage you to read the featured article. You may be one of many that could truly benefit from becoming aware of this Obamacare exemption option that actually provides that insurance component [often times at a superior price, as I will discuss in a future post more thoroughly] that so many of us find important and valuable.

As a self-employed consultant and person of faith, David Schneider chose in 2012 to enroll his family in a health-care sharing ministry to cover their medical costs.

Since then, Schneider’s family has received help with tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses for surgeries on his legs and a son’s broken collarbone. In exchange, the family pays about $700 monthly, and the ministry is not responsible for the first $1,250 of medical expenses annually.

The 54-year-old Columbus man’s experience has made him a convert to the increasingly popular alternative to traditional health insurance.

In fact, Schneider said he convinced his new employer to offer taxable lump sums that employees can use to buy ministry memberships in lieu of joining the company’s health-insurance plan.

“There isn’t another health-insurance plan that I’ll have for the rest of my life,” said Schneider, whose wife, Kimberly, and three youngest children also are part of the Florida-based ministry called Medi-Share, which has more than 170,000 members nationwide and more than 6,000 in Ohio.

Enrollment in health-care sharing ministries recently shot past half a million people, up from about 200,000 three years ago.

The trend has been partly fueled by the Affordable Care Act, ministry officials say.
